Thanks for joining me here! I’ve been teaching ancient Greek literature (as well as narrative nonfiction writing) for many years, most of them at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. In 2011, I began teaching incarcerated students through Wesleyan’s Center for Prison Education. Working with these men was in part the inspiration for this newsletter. Greek tragedy, with its focus on the precariousness of life and the human struggle to reset the course of fate, is for everybody. The plays tell me something new every time I retell them here.

Why do I love Greek tragedy? These mythical stories of war, familial trauma, and isolation illuminate the beauty and darkness of our shared humanity. They tell me something new every time I read them; retelling them here is my passion.

“This Won’t End Well: On Loving Greek Tragedy” combines my two passions, Greek mythology and the personal/political essay. I’ll tell you the old stories and invite you to think about what they still have to tell us.
